A Tribute to Great Azadar Syed Nazre Hasan

Alhaj Syed Nazre Hasan Before His Illness

Dr.Mazhar Naqvi

Imami community suffered a setback following the death of a generous azadar Haji Syed Nazre Hasan in Kanpur today. He breathed his last at his residence at the age of 66 in Gwaltoli area after a prolonged illness. The news of his death was received with shock and a large crowd gathered at his house to condolen to his sons Adil and Asif and also to attend his funeral. Syed Nazre Hasan belonged to Jaunpur district but made Kanpur his permanent settlement as a successful businessman. He supplied chemicals to the tanneries and his ethical trade practices made him a favorite among the leather magnets of Kanpur. When his business flourished, he did not attempt to lead a luxurious life. Rather, he started supporting generously the programs hosted by Anjumans to promote the message of Imam Hussain. At his instance, several news programs also emerged during Ayam-e-Aza in Kanpur. Nazre Hasan Sahib also derived pleasure in playing host to visiting Ulema and patronized a number of Shair-e-Ahlebait.

Due to migration of prominent Imami families at the time of partition, Azadari had suffered in Kanpur. Areas with sizable Imami population such as Kursawan, Neelwali Gali, Patkapur, Beconganj and Chamanganj become deserted. A few families kept Azadari rituals alive in Hata Nawab Saheb, Gwaltoli, Colonelganj and Sakera Estate. With the enactment of Wakf Hadi begum in late 50s, Colonelganj became the hub of Muharram related activities. The situation remained so till 70s and a new vigor was observed in Ayam-e-Aza when Nazre Hasan Sahib doled out money generously to promote Majalis, Shabbedaris, Mahfils and processions all over the city from early 80s. He never refused to support any endeavor that aimed at Farogh-e-Aza (Promotion of Azadari). As a result, almost all the Matami Anjumans of Kanpur prominently displayed his name as Chief Patron in their banners and posters related to their Azadari related programs.

He also donated generously when a decision was taken by Kanpur Imamis to construct a shrine of Imam Hussain at Nawabganj Badi Karbala. His generosity propelled others to contribute to the construction of a grand Rauza of Imam and a project that looked difficult initially became a reality. Likewise, Haji Nazre Hasan also supported the celebration of Hussain Day every year. He also contributed greatly to the introduction of Yaum-e-Rasul program by Maulana kalbe Jawwad Fans’ Association a few years back. In return of his great love for Holy Prophet, his Ahle-Bait and Azadari, the Almighty blessed him with Hajj and Ziyarat of Kaba Sharif, Masjid-e-Nabwi, Najaf-e-Ashraf, Karbala-e-Moella, Damascus and Mashhad. When he fell ill, he encouraged his son Asif to take interest in Azadari the way he himself took.

When he was laid to rest at Nawabganj Karbala in presence of hundreds of people, everyone one was of the view that the void caused by his death will be extremely difficult to fill. As Ayam-e-Aza is still going on, he will be missed in the programs that are scheduled to be organized during the remaining period of Muharram mourning. May Allah give him place among his chosen ones in the Sadqa of Ale-Muhammad and offer Sabre- Jameel to his grief-stricken family.
