Hindus Praises Imam Hussain in Folksong 'Jharni'

Dr.Mazhar Naqvi

Hindus of yet another village of Bihar displays religious tolerance every year by participating in Muharram rituals as a mark of respect for martyrs of Karbala. Like Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, they sing folk songs in praise of Imam Hussain. Known as ‘Jharni” in Bhojpuri language, devotees from adjoining villages pour in good numbers to join Muharram procession in MahmadiapurHaripur to listen the folk song on ‘Yaum-E- Ashura day in 2019 like yesteryears.

As a part of their century old tradition, they also offer “Chadars” and floral tributes at the shrine of Sufi Chedi Shah , considering him to be descendant of Imam Hussain.

Hindus call Tazias as ‘Imam Hussain ka Jaikara and Alam as Nishan’. They recite Fatiha with the help of Shrine’s caretaker. Hindu women also take part in the rituals and make offerings. Hindus seek various favors from Imam in front of Tazias and promise to make offerings if their wish is fulfilled by the invoking.

Being mostly ignorant and illiterate, they fail to furnish exact details about the origin of Muharram observance in their village but claim that they had inherited it from their elders and ancestors. Likewise, very little is known about Sufi Chedi Shah .To them, he remains a Pir Baba who has powers to mitigate their hardships and problems being a descendant of Imam Hussain.
