Hindus of Umaria enthusiastically participate
in Muharram ceremonies every year since
1882.They do so what can be termed as unique display of solidarity between
Hindus and Muslims. The tradition was started by Baba Madhav Singh and since
then Hindus make it a point to attend in large number Muharram mourners. In
2019,over 25000 registered their presence in Ashura procession.
Hindus in large numbers had
traditionally been participating in the rally. On the night of Shahadat,
thousands of Baba's devotees took part in the rally wearing green scarf on head
and 'sehali' around the neck and chanting slogans. It was difficult to
differentiate between Hindus and Muslims, according to Imambada's caretaker Syed Ali Khan .
The responsibility to look after
the arrangement of the Muharram rally is shared by Hindus Mateshwar Durga Puja
Seva Samiti's Ganesh Sachdev. All members of the Samiti contribute towards
preparation of 'langar.'
Locals recall that Muharram and Dussehra had fallen on same
dates in 1983. Both communities had celebrated the festivals together. On the
one hand, Divine Mother's procession was being carried out, on the other
immersion of Tazia took place.
