Hindu Tazia Makers of Rasulpur in Bihar

Dr.Mazhar Naqvi
In an era when fanatics are striving to refrain Hindus from participating in Muharram rituals, Rasulpur village of Saran district remains unaffected out of devotion for Hazrat Imam Hussain. They observed Muharram in 2019 with utmost dignity and devotion and resolved to enhance their participation the next year too.
They are not much aware about the philosophy behind Karbala Revolution but know that Imam had scored victory over evil and hence, Muharram should be observed. They draw a parallel to Lord Rama’s victory over devilish Ravana while observing Dussehra and Muharram both.
Some of the villagers excel in the art of Tazia making. they have been preparing the replica of Imam’s shrine in Karbala(Iraq) for the past three generations. They do so with a sense of pride and healthy competition is also seen among them as to who comes out with the best Tazia. Those involved in Tazia making refrain from eating and observe fast.
Every year, they introduce new designs and patterns. The villagers have learnt the art of Thakur Sonis who are considered to be among the best artists of Tazia making from Kumarbhumi area of Bengal. Their leader used to arrive in Rasulpur when grew old roped in local youths in the preparation of Tazia with the condition that his secret would never be revealed. Since then, disciples have become experts themselves. Muslims who rated themselves very high in Tazia making have been outsmarted by their Hindu counterparts several times in the past. But on each occasion, they open heartedly admitted that Tazias of Hindus we3re better.
