Dr.Mazhar Naqvi
At the outset, I offer my sincere apologies to all those Muslims who
love Holy Prophet and his Ahle-Bait. My apologies come in the wake of my recent
articles that were posted in reply to the accusations made by a fanatic. As he constantly
accused me of having hatred against Sahaba Karam and glorified Yazid, I had no
option but to highlight certain facts recorded by eminent scholars that indicate
how Sahabas defied the instructions of Nabi Kareem. I know that a vast majority
of Muslims hold all Sahabas in high esteem. They quote a Hadees of Imam Bukhari,
declaring all those who saw the face of Holy Prophet as his companions. Contrary
to the belief of majority, Imamis follow a stricter definition. They don’t
consider every Muslim who saw the Prophet and lived in his lifetime as
companions. Imamis are of the view that one who follows the precepts of Islam
can only be considered as a companion. Whoever falls into this category is
praised and whoever doesn’t is not treated as a companion.
Imamis argue that the Quran speaks negatively about many of those who
professed Islam and lived with the Prophet. The Quran labels some as
hypocrites, some with low levels of
faith and spirituality, some ready to turn back from their religion, some as wrongdoers, and some who claim that they are believers while faith
has not entered their hearts. They give example of Malik bin Nuwayrah. He was a
great companion of the Prophet and killed by a fellow Muslim who wanted to take
his wife. Since both were companions, can both the murdered and the murderer be
praised? Should such a murderer be considered worthy of praise just because he
happened to see the face of the Prophet, Imamis opine.
The Shia belief is that a companion is just (acting in accordance to the
precepts of Islam). If a person was not just and merely lived at the time of
the Prophet he is not considered a companion in the sense that one should
take him as a role model and praise him. Since Imamis apply a more strict
formula for praising a companion, enemies of Islam use it as a tool to create
sectarian strife and divide the community. They constantly accuse Imamis of having
a hidden hatred for the companions of the Messenger of Allah. While condemning all Imamis who harbor hatred against
noble Sahabas, I would like to assure the entire Muslim community that Imamis love
the companions of the Prophet and consider them as role models.
No one can deny the fact that the companions supported the Prophet, defended
him and sacrificed their entire existence for him. Allah praises the companions
in the Quran stating: “Muhammad, the Apostle of Allah, and those who are with
him are hard against the faithless and merciful amongst themselves. You see
them bowing and prostrating, seeking Allah’s grace and pleasure. Their mark is
[visible] on their faces, from the effect of prostration. Such is their
description in the Torah and their description in the Evangel…Allah has
promised those who have faith and do righteous deeds, forgiveness and a great
reward.” (Quran, 48:29)
Imam Ali discussed the companions in these words “I have seen the
companions of the Prophet but I do not find anyone resembling them. They began
the day with dishevelled hair and dust on their faces and spent their nights in
prostration and prayers. Sometimes they put down their foreheads and sometimes
their cheeks [in prostration]…between their eyes there was thickened skin like
the knees of goats…”
Imam Sajjad also prayed for the companions: “…and as for the Companions
of Muhammad specifically, those who did well in companionship, who stood the
good test in helping him, responded to him when he made them hear his messages’
argument, separated from their mates and children in manifesting his
word, fought against their fathers and sons in strengthening his prophecy, and
through him gained victory; those who were wrapped in affection for him, hoping
for a commerce that comes not to naught in love for him; those who were left by
their clans when they clung to his handhold and denied by their kinsfolk when
they rested in the shadow of his kinship; forget not, O God, what they
abandoned for Thee and in Thee, and make them pleased with Thy good pleasure
for the sake of the creatures they drove to Thee while they were with Thy
Messenger”.
These descriptions exemplify that Imamis love and adore the companions
of the Prophet. They praise and pray that Allah rewards them immensely for
their efforts. So the Muslims should denounce those who make false allegations
to spread hatred among various sects at the instance of Israel. Likewise, those
who utter even a single word against any just Sahaba also deserves condemnation,
for he too aims at division of Ummat-E-Muhammadi.(The article has been written in reply to false allegations made by a regular viewer Mr.Syed Hafeez Hussaini who pretends to be a Sunni but holds Yazid in high esteem).
