This article is being posed to mark the martyrdom anniversary of Hazrat Fatima Zahra (SA).
Dr.Mazhar Naqvi
“O
Prophet of God, peace be upon you from me and from your daughter who has come
to you and who has hastened to meet you. O Prophet of God, my patience has been
exhausted, and my power of endurance has weakened, except that I have ground
for consolation in having endured the great hardship and heart-rending event of
your separation. I laid you down in your grave when your last breath had passed
while your head was resting between my neck and chest. Surely, we are from God
and unto Him shall we return. Now the trust – i.e. your daughter – is being
returned and what was given is being taken back. As to my grief, it knows no
bounds, and as to my nights, they will remain sleepless till God chooses for me
the house in which you are now residing.”
This is how Imam Ali
had expressed his profound grief while laying his wife and lady of light Bibi Fatima
to eternal rest? He had every reason to mourn her tragic end, for she was not
only the beloved daughter of Holy Prophet but also a wife par excellence. Everyone
knows that Imam Ali and Bibi Fatima was a perfect couple. The tremendous love
and respect of the prophet for his daughter is also very well known. The Prophet
used to say “ Fatima is a
part of me, whoever displeases her has displeased me and whoever displeases me
has displeased Allah.”.Yet she had to face so much persecution by rulers and
followers of the religion founded by her exalted father that she had to recite
this elegy: "O Father after
you such great calamities have fallen upon me, that the sorrow is enough to
turn bright days into dark nights".
She was in the prime of her youth and
suffered untold calamities after departure of her father. The Prophet always showed utmost respect to
her. But her inheritance was seized by the new rulers on the pretext that
whatever the Prophets leave is charity and not inheritance. She defended her
rights to exemplify to the world that Islam guarantees the rights of women. In
support of her claim, she quoted verses from the Holy Quran, illustrating that How
Solomon had inherited from David. No one paid heed to her logics. She suffered
greatest blow when , rights of her husband were usurped Imam Ali was divinely-designated
successor of the Prophet but not only his right was denied but disrespect was
also extended to him by those who were paid agents of the regime.
Hearts of Muslims had
had hardened to the extent that she was
not even allowed to weep for her father in her home. They found her wailing much
disturbing. She had to go outside Medina to remember her father. Imam
Ali had to built a small room to protect
her from the torrid heat of the Arabian sun. It was called "Bayt ol-Hozn" or "House
of Grief". One day a
mob attacked her house with torchlights and iron bars. Miscreants threatened to burn
the house if her husband Imam Ali does not come out and swear allegiance to the
new regime. She flatly refused to do so and told them her four little children were
also in the house. The raiders did not listen to her and uprooted the door. It
fell upon Bibi and pinned her to the wall. As a result, she suffered a
miscarriage but even in that condition she continued to defend her husband when
the rogues made an attempt to drag him out of the house.
She spent 95 awful days after her father, leaving
behind a grief-stricken husband and
four young children, namely Imam Hassan, Imam Hussain, Hazrat Zainab and Hazrat
Umme Kulsum. As a fulfillment of her
wish, she was buried in the dead of night and none of her oppressors were
allowed to attend her funeral. Since then, her admirers have been commemorating
her martyrdom anniversary in various parts of the world. Of late, programs
commemorating her martyrdom have increased in number and scale. This is a good
sign as there is need to create awareness about the life and personality of
Bibi Fatima among those who brand Islam as an anti-Women religion. . She was the symbol of womanhood. She
embodied in her translucent personality all those qualities that made her a
paradigm of virtue. The Prophet saluted at her door. The celestial angels sang
her praise. Hence, every woman needs to know about her to understand the real
status of women in Islam and how should they behave in adverse circumstances.(Sources
